The Early Years

During the late 1800's, Atlanta, Chattanooga and Birmingham had developed a wealthy class of citizens that sought a respite from the summer heat. Not unlike the summer, beach migrations were sought by wealthy families from Mobile, Montgomery and Tallahassee; if one could afford to leave the city during the hot months it was the thing to do. The mountains offered low humidity, cool evening and relatively mild day time temperatures. By 1910, speculators had found Lookout Mountain and developers were all too eager to propose the next great getaway. By 1920, nearly 50 small "resorts" had been drawn on paper or just a dinner napkin, as the saying goes. With beautiful natural rivers and lakes, few resorts saw the need to build golf courses or even swimming pools. Most built a dining hall, some administration buildings, a chapel/social building and a handful of cabins. Small lots were platted by the
