  • Of the many thousands of mountain "resort" lots platted nearly 100 years ago, fewer than one thousand homes have been built today. Most of those in the last 30 years as people are beginning to once again look for a good family environment to enjoy summers. The facilities from the old Chautauqua era resorts are now the heart of nearly 35 children's summer camps. These camps with names like Skyline, Riverview, Laney and Juliet Lowe welcome nearly 15,000 children from two to six week sessions. Canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, singing, theater and worship are things that bring generations of families back each year. Most owners of mountain homes in the area tell stories of either coming to camp or having a friend who came to camp in the area. Parents regularly spend a night or two at either drop off time or pickup time each summer. The preferred accommodations are those of friends who have invested in a cabin or home on the mountain. Small rental cabins throughout the area number a couple of hundred with mountain views, river views and lake views.
